Summer Camp Counselors

- General Statement of Duties:
- Summer Camp Counselors are responsible for planning, leading, and implementing daily recreational programs and activities for children in both small and large group settings. Counselors ensure the safety, development, growth, and positive experience of all participants within their assigned group and the overall program.
- Essential Responsibilities:
- Must be available to work the full six (6) weeks of camp
- Ensure the health, safety, well-being, and happiness of all campers, including knowing campers’ whereabouts at all times
- Build positive relationships with campers and provide appropriate supervision throughout the program
- Teach, assist with, and actively participate in playground and recreational activities
- Supervise campers in the water and on the beach (lifeguards retain ultimate waterfront responsibility)
- Plan, implement, and lead daily activities, special events, and off-site trips
- Encourage and creatively motivate all children to participate, ensuring no child is excluded
- Know, understand, and enforce all safety and emergency procedures
- Provide or assist with first aid as needed
- Complete accident and incident reports in accordance with established policies
- Wear staff t-shirt and appropriate attire daily
- Maintain a clean, organized program site and assist with care and use of supplies and equipment
- Identify and appropriately respond to behavior issues and report concerns to the Lead or Parks & Recreation Summer Camp Director
- Maintain accurate program records including attendance, departure logs, and incident reports
- Work cooperatively with fellow counselors and support staff as part of a team
- Refer parent or guardian concerns to the Lead or Parks & Recreation Summer Manager
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to motivate and encourage children of all ages in a group setting
- Ability to communicate with children and adults with kindness, respect, and understanding
- Ability to complete written reports and maintain records
- Highly energetic, enthusiastic, and self-motivated
- Strong leadership skills with a positive attitude
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum age: 15 years or older
- Applicants 18 years or older must pass an employment background check required by the Town
- Demonstrated experience working with children
- Ability and desire to work in a cooperative, team-oriented environment
- Enthusiasm, patience, self-control, sense of humor, and a genuine desire to have fun
- Availability to work Monday–Friday for six (6) continuous weeks
- Ability to arrive early or stay late for staff meetings as needed
- Required attendance at all staff trainings held in mid-to-late June
- Possession of current CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogen, and Concussion Training certifications or successful completion of courses provided by Oxford Parks & Recreation

- General Statement of Duties:
- The Summer Lifeguard's primary responsibility is to prevent drowning and other injuries. Candidates must ensure patron safety by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors. This person needs to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills and possess the ability to work with diverse populations. Lifeguards must enforce facility policies and effectively communicate why policies are in place.
- Essential Responsibilities:
- Recognize and respond effectively in emergency situations by activating the Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
- Actively guard and scan the lake/pool area at all times; refrain from socializing while guarding.
- Communicate and enforce all policies and rules in a personable and professional manner.
- Staff must always wear their swimsuit and whistle while on duty.
- A proper response in a timely manner includes radio communication to the front desk, building managers, and direct supervisors.
- Cooperate and communicate professionally with camp staff and campers
- Record daily participation numbers and complete daily cleaning assignments.
- Attend and participate in regular in-service trainings.
- Provide a welcoming environment for all patrons.
- Document any incidents and/or injuries.
- Maintain a clean and tidy workspace by performing maintenance duties throughout shifts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Must have the ability to act calmly and effectively in an emergency situation.
- Willingness to work as part of a team, with flexibility to do whatever is required.
- Availability to work the summer season, including nights and weekends, requiring minimal time off, if any.
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of 16 years of age. Prior lifeguarding experience is preferred but not mandatory.
- Must have a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding, First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
- Ability to deal with public and other staff in a non-confrontational manner
- Knowledge of water rescue and resuscitation techniques.
